<br /><br /></div><div><strong>Palabras clave:</strong> Selenio, Química seleno-orgánica, Química</div><div>seleno-inorgánica, selenoproteínas</div></div><div> </div><div><div><strong>Abstract</strong></div><div>Throughout its already almost 200 years of scientific live,</div><div>Selenium has changed to be an element classified almost</div><div>exclusively as a poison to be an important substance with</div><div>relevant uses in chemistry, biology, medicine and even in the</div><div>industry. The different reactivity of compounds of Selenium</div><div>in contrast to its less heavy chalcogen analogs (oxygen</div><div>and sulfur) has allowed the development of new synthetic</div><div>methods, both in organic and inorganic chemistry. Different</div><div>biochemical investigations have demonstrated that Selenium</div><div>is both a human and animal essential micronutrient, and that</div><div>both deficit and excess can cause catastrophic consequences in these living organisms. This biochemical interest in Selenium has also pushing the discovering of important applications of its organic compounds in several medical treatments. The purpose of this work is to highlight some of the main aspects related to the chemical and physicochemical properties of Selenium and its compounds, as well as remarking the essential role that this element plays in human and animal health and nutrition. </div></div><div> </div><div><div><strong>Keywords: </strong>Selenium, Seleno-organic chemistry,Selenoinorganic  chemistry, Selenoproteins.</div></div><div> </div> ER -
