Learning a foreign language is a broad concept that involves several elements. One of our concerns as language teachers is the role of the mother tongue in such processes. In this sense, we always think about first language in terms of its use, role in language lessons, and how it interrupts second language acquisition. On the other hand, we may also look at the way in which it can contribute to the development of the target language. More specifically, we can analyze L1 and its various appearances in the form of lexical borrowing. So, how can lexical borrowing interfere or contribute to EFL learning and teaching?
