The writing must follow the international norms for scientific manuscripts, which regulate abbreviations, literature cited, symbols, and atomic, zoological, botanical and chemical nomenclature, among others. Values must be given in the metric system according to the International System of Units (SI). Initials and acronyms must be defined the first time they appear in the manuscript.

The writing must be concise and technical. The manuscripts must include:

  • Title (in English and Spanish): Precise, informative and of 15 words maximum.

  • Introduction: It should pinpoint the aim of the study clearly, while highlighting the pertinent literature. Do not include data or conclusions of the study in introduction.
  • Methods: In this section, the procedures, experimental design and data analysis methods employed in the study are described. It should describe the study type, place (including geographic coordinates), geoclimatic conditions, plants or animals studied, laboratory methods, analytical methods and ethic aspects.
  • Results: In this section, the main findings of the study are presented in a logic, objective and sequential way, using text, tables and figures, and avoiding redundancy. Tables and figures should be self-explanatory.
  • Discussion and conclusions: The discussion should describe the most important contributions of the study; it should be complete and exhaustive, and should compare the results with the current literature on the topic, highlighting limitations and avoiding speculations.
  • Acknowledgment: If necessary, a section listing and thanking the institutions that help with the study may be included.
  • References: They should be sorted alphabetically at the end of the manuscript, following the APA style. If a reference has a DOI, please include it at the end of each reference.

Main sections must be numbered with roman numbers; second level sections, with letters; and third level sections, with arabic numerals; if a fourth level is required, use punctuation bullet points.

All section titles must be in bold, aligned to the left and only with the first letter of the first word capitalized. Tables and figures must follow the following formatting:

  • Tables: They must be numbered consecutively with roman numbers. The legend must go on top of the table; abbreviation and symbols must be explained in a footnote.
  • Figures: They include maps, photographs and graphics. Figures should be cited in the text and must be numbered consecutively with arabic numerals. The legend must be concise and descriptive and must go below the figure.
  • Equations: The use of an equation editor and the adoption of the International Notation System is encouraged. Within the text, equations must be centered and numbered with arabic numerals within parenthesis at the right of the equation.

In any case, the manuscript must be adapted to the described structure.

References

All assertions throughout the manuscript that come from another document or publication must have a citation. References must be sorted alphabetically at the end of the manuscript; all literature listed in the reference section should be cited in the manuscript.

Since 2019, Ciencia y Agricultura adopted the APA style for references; that is, it uses the author-date system. Within the text, references must be cited in the following format:

  • One author: (Last name(s), year of publication). For example: (Pulido, 2009).
  • Two authors: (Last name(s) of leading author and Last name(s) of second author, year of publication). For example: (Pulido and Medellín, 2010).
  • Three or more authors: (Last name(s) of leading author et al., year of publication). For example (Pulido et al., 2001).
  • When several references are cited, they must be sorted alphabetically and separated by semi colon (;): (Last name(s) of author, year of publication; Last name(s) of publication, year of publication). For example: (García, 2010; Pulido, 2008; Pulido & Medellín, 2016).

Special cases:

In case two or more authors share the same last name, put before the last name the initial of the first name (Initial name. Last name(s), year of publication). For example: (P. Medellín, 2017), (O. Medellín, 2014).

In case the author is an institution, write the name or acronym and the year (Institution, year of publication). For example: (UPTC, 2001).
