VARIATION OF THE FUNCTIONAL TRAITS OF THE ICHTHYOFAUNA OF AN ANDEAN RIVER

Abstract

This study focused on evaluating the variation in the functional structure of the fish assemblage and its relationship with environmental variables in the Batá river sub-basin. Consequently, sampling was carried out at 13 points located after the reservoir wall up to the lower part of the basin, in each of which physicochemical measurements were taken and a characterization of the channel was performed. Twenty-three morphometric measurements were taken from the fish collected to elucidate the functionality of the species. The results indicate that depending on the environmental gradient we will find predominant functional traits. For example, at points close to the dam, the occurrence of species with a developed pectoral and pelvic fin complex was expected, and as they moved away from the dam wall, species with a long caudal peduncle occurred. Environmental variables played an important role in the composition of the functional traits, with temperature and depth being relevant.
