Call for Papers number 52: La Palabra Journal’s Special Issue on Literature and Gender
2025-04-02
Associate Editor: Marina Almeida
Gender literature offers new perspectives for the study of contemporary social, cultural, and political dynamics. In this regard, works of science fiction, fantasy, horror, mystery, romance, among others, not only challenge traditional literary conventions but also serve as a fertile ground for the analysis of issues such as identity, technology, power, gender, and marginalization. In the academic context, these texts enable critical reflection on social transformations and the impacts of globalization, new media, and environmental changes. Furthermore, genre literature provides an interdisciplinary approach, integrating fields such as sociology, philosophy, cultural studies, and literary theory, becoming a valuable tool for scholars interested in understanding the complexity of the modern world and possible paths for the future.
This literary genre plays a crucial role in reflecting and shaping the complexities of contemporary society. By exploring themes such as identity, diversity, social justice, and existential issues, it offers an accessible and engaging way to discuss multifaceted realities. Because it allows greater experimentation and narrative innovation by breaking the barriers typically presented by traditional literary genres, its fluidity also facilitates the engagement of different audiences, addressing universal topics through lenses that capture the collective imagination and foster important debates. In a globalized and interconnected world, genre literature continues to be a dynamic reflection of our culture, centralizing voices considered alternative and fostering greater empathy and understanding.
Without the intention of exhausting the possibilities of approaching the theme, La Palabra Journal aims to gather papers that engage with this perspective and address, among other issues:
1) Gender and Decolonial Narratives in Latin-American Literature;
2) Queer Theory and Literary Representations in Contemporary Fiction;
3) Feminist Rewritings of Canonical Texts: a Global Perspective;
4) Intersectionality in Literature: Race, Class and Gender;
5) Gender and Digital Literature: New Media and Identity Construction;
6) Ecofeminism and Literary Landscapes;
7) Masculinities in Literature: Rethinking Traditional Paradigms;
8) Gender, Trauma and Memory in Literary Works;
9) Transgender and Non-Binary Voices in Literature;
10) Gender and Popular Culture: from Folklore to Contemporary Fiction.
