Textual Comprehension and Interpretation in Students: A Perspective from Miguel de Zubiría

Abstract

The research aimed to analyze the impact of Miguel de Zubiría's theory of six readings on the reading comprehension of sixth-grade students at New Cambridge School in Pamplona, Norte de Santander, Colombia. This study was based on the theory. Additionally, a qualitative approach and an Action Research methodological design were employed. The instruments used for data collection were interviews, diagnosis, direct observation, and field diaries. The results revealed that motivation was essential to focus the participants' attention on reading. Likewise, vocabulary was strengthened using mechanisms for meaning making. On the other hand, the use of outlines was a useful strategy for summarizing information. In conclusion, it is mentioned that there was an impact on the students' reading comprehension in terms of interest in reading, vocabulary strengthening, argumentative and creative capacity, and the creation of the requested mind map. However, there was a need to review the pedagogical planning to start with a more detailed explanation of the topics to be covered. It is worth mentioning that reading comprehension provides the ability to develop skills that can be applied in concrete situations. Therefore, individuals not only improve their practical competencies but also enhance their problem-solving skills.
