Core Concepts of Gottlob Frege's Philosophy: An Introduction

Abstract

The main aim of this paper is to introduce the reader to some fundamental concepts of Gottlob Frege's philosophy. These are: the sense/reference binomial, the truth value of sentences with non-referential elements, the distinction between thinking, judging and asserting, his conception of indexicals and demonstratives, as well as his defense of the existence of a third kingdom. In some of them it will be shown some associated problems that have been highlighted by renowned thinkers. Such is the case, for example, of Bertrand Russell's famous critique of Frege's semantics for its inability to account for the truth value of fictitious sentences. Aimed specially at the lay reader, though without losing academic rigor, this work attempts to introduce some of the main Fregean theses through his primary sources.
