Sloterdijk: philosopher of art?

Abstract

The work suggests the thesis that in Sloterdijk’s thought there would be hidden–unsuspectedly– a certain philosophy of art. But it would not be just any philosophy of art. Sloterdijk’s would not be purely philosophy or cosmology, art or mythology, but all of them at the same time. And also more than that: a philosophy of art that seeks “the truth of art” only equipped with the lamp of Diogenes, and that, in that search, ends up developing the most effective form of Western tantrism. The “Sloterdijkian solution”, metamorphosed into a sort of philosophy of darkness, seems to redirect art towards the only path it still has left: that of returning to a meditativity that overcomes the dualisms of street/museum, creation/exhibition, artist/gallery or artifice/nature. Under this premise, Sloterdijk’s “aesthetic imperative” actually becomes a non-imperative, that is to say, a veiled call of conscience that corroborates the apocalyptic urgency of the aesthetic-therapeutic restoration of late modern society.
