Nursing role in the face of vaccine hesitancy: a scoping review

Abstract

Introduction: Vaccine hesitancy is considered a complex phenomenon, where nursing in Latin America has not ventured in a concrete way, therefore, it is considered a vital element for the discipline to address and interpret it from the role of nursing. Objective: To understand the scope and type of evidence in relation to the role of nursing in the face of reluctance, rejection and refusal behaviors towards vaccination in Latin America. Materials and methods: A scoping review was carried out where 29 research articles were prioritized, these from 2020 and identified in Latin America. Results: The main reasons for vaccination hesitancy identified in Latin America were misinformation, fear, distrust in vaccines and in the health system. Various intervention strategies were identified in Europe and the USA, which focus on education, awareness and communicative health. Discussion: There is no evidence of comprehensive nursing actions addressing the phenomenon in Latin America. Conclusions: Vaccination hesitancy in Latin America is a phenomenon that requires a very primary approach. It is necessary to identify it, qualify it and study the most cost-effective strategies to address vaccination hesitancy among nurses in the services.
