Abstract

El Tratado de Libre Comercio (TLC) que espera firmar Colombia con los Estados Unidos ha generado en el país una gran controversia, y, como en todo proceso de integración, surgen defensores y opositores. Los defensores consideran que en la coyuntura actual, signada por la globalización y la liberalización de los mercados, es necesaria la integración con E.U. ya que si
Colombia no lo hace hay otros países con las mismas condiciones del nuestro que sí lo harán. Arguyen, también, que el tamaño de la economía de Estados Unidos representa el
22 por ciento del PIB mundial, y es el principal importador con compras anuales por 1.3 billones de dólares, además, que E.U. es el mayor socio comercial de Colombia: las ventas a ese país representan el 44 por ciento del total de las exportaciones mientras que para E.U. las importaciones procedentes de Colombia representan apenas el 0.7 por ciento del total de sus compras externas.
