Seville and the “sevillanismo” in Juan Belmonte, killer of bulls by Manuel Chaves Nogales

Abstract
This article examines the role of the city of Seville as a character in the biography Juan Belmonte, Killer of Bulls, by Manuel Chaves Nogales, published in 1935. Through narrative analysis, it explores the extent to which Sevillanism, a way of being in the world tied to Seville, shapes the trajectory of the renowned Spanish bullfighter. Chaves Nogales, himself a native of Seville, emphasizes the significance of Belmonte’s birthplace in Calle Ancha de la Feria, noting that every aspect of the matador’s life is
linked to his childhood experiences in the Andalusian capital. The biographer highlights the boundaries of a Sevillian perspective, acknowledging how life is experienced elsewhere, and reveals the ease with which Belmonte invokes Seville to boast, while also signaling his own personality’s complexities and limitations.
