The volume is devoted primarily to providing the reader with an overview of higher education in the Americas from colonial times to the present. It is very valuable in that it allows us to return to the roots of many of the higher education institutions and points out the challenges they still face and have not yet resolved. As Celina Lértora Mendoza pointed out some time ago, the study of the history of higher education requires an interdisciplinary approach that transcends that of the universities and this effort to synthesize the history of our American universities is an example of this assertion
