Collaborative Economy and Tourism: A Systematic Review

Abstract

This study focuses on conducting a thorough analysis of the theoretical foundations and crucial elements that underpin the collaborative economy, highlighting its importance in the tourism sector. Through a systematic review of the literature from 71 documents, the theoretical foundations and predominant methodological approaches in the field are examined. The analysis reveals a diversity of theoretical perspectives, with an emphasis on collaborative tourism, social, economic, and political impacts, and sustainability. Methodologically, there is a preference for qualitative and quantitative techniques, suitable for exploring the dynamics between users and providers of tourism services. The research indicates a growing, albeit limited, scientific production, mainly concentrated in Spain and Denmark, and highlights the importance of promoting geographical diversity in future studies. Additionally, emerging research areas are identified, focused on understanding the intersections of the collaborative economy with other fields of interest, marking an evolution towards a more comprehensive and multidisciplinary approach in the study of these topics.
