Social and solidarity economy and community ecological sustainability in the fishing sector in Oaxaca, Mexico

Abstract

The objective of this research is to analyze the influence of the business dimension of the Social and Solidarity Economy (ESS) on community ecological sustainability. Based on the theoretical framework, the factors involved in the relationship of both variables were established, which allowed the development of a semi-structured questionnaire. A mixed methodology was determined, 110 questionnaires were applied to fishing cooperative members from the municipalities of San Pedro Mixtepec and San Pedro Tapanatepec of the State of Oaxaca, an exploratory factor analysis (EFA) was carried out. The results obtained show the positive and significant relationship between the business dimension of the SSE and the Community Ecological Sustainability (SEC) of the aforementioned municipalities. A graphic analysis of co-occurrence is included that shows the relationship between the SSE and cooperativism, fair trade, and decent work. In general, this study illustrates the importance of the business dimension in the sustainability of communities, but above all of the actions that the members of these localities perceive of their business environment that influence their development and their relationship with natural resources.
