From Bakhtin to Reinaldo Arenas: Popular Culture in The Colour of Summer

Abstract
The present study proposes an approach to the novel by Cuban writer Reinaldo Arenas, The Color of Summer (1991), starting from its first chapter: “The Escape of La Avellaneda. Light work in an act (of repudiation)”. For this, we have considered Bakhtin’s ideas about popular culture. According to him, within popular culture we can find three large categories: rituals and spectacles, verbal comic works, and multiple forms of familiar vocabulary and rude lexicon. Likewise, Bakhtinian theory views carnival as a phenomenon capable of reversing any hierarchy and enhancing subversive manifestations within the literary work. The theory of the carnival, as well as the particular handling of the lexicon and the subversion of hierarchies, allowed us to draw important keys to the aesthetic construction of the novel.
