Role of Discourse Markers in Reading Comprehension

Abstract

This paper is the result of a study aimed at determining whether the absence of discourse markers —information structurers and connectors— affects the level of reading comprehension. For this purpose, an experiment was implemented with firstsemester students from various academic programs of a Colombian public university using a quantitative-descriptive approach with a quasi experimental design, through a reading comprehension test with a control group and an experimental one. The experimental group received the text without the markers. The data were analyzed based on a statistical test of the research hypothesis. The results showed that the presence —or absence— of this class of markers does not affect the processing of literal or inferential information from the text; however, it does so concerning the metalinguistic processing of the text, which implies a higher level of abstraction on the part of the reader.
