Children’s Moral Judgments: an Evaluation Instrument in Multimedia Format

Abstract

Moral Judgment consists of the positive or negative evaluation of the conduct of others. This study aimed at the construction and application of stimulus stories in multimedia format to evaluate children’s Moral Judgment regarding: the quality of good and bad intentioned actions and justice of maternal conduct. To achieve this objective, the methodological path was divided into two stages: 1) process of constructing stimulus stories, with important differences, such as: explicit intentions
of the characters, consequences of acts of similar gravity, insertion of a maternal figure, etc.; 2)
application of the instrument to a sample of 33 children, aged between 4 and 11 years, living in
Recife-PE. The results indicated that children from 4 years of age are capable of making judgments
based on the agents’ explicit intentions, indicating early autonomy. On the other hand, judgments
of children over 8 years old were identified based on the consequences of acts or the reactions of the maternal figure in the vignettes, possibly anchored in the heteronomy stage. Therefore, the
instrument proved to be suitable for identifying the aspects that guide the moral judgments of
school-age children.
