Teachers’ social emotional skills: education from the ethics of the care of the self

Abstract

This document analyses the testimonies of teachers from three generations who took part in the Ser Docente Ser Persona diploma course, which focuses on socio-emotional skills. A set of experiences and learning that favour the personal and professional dimension of the teacher, especially the care for oneself and others and for the profession, were identified. Through a systematization of evaluation questionnaires and a process of coding, categorisation and analysis, the need to acquire training in the human and relational dimensions of teaching was highlighted. The research showed the need to work on the basis of self-care and one's own experiences in order to achieve a direct impact on interpersonal relationships between teachers, with their students, and with respect to their professional identity. It was also found that the training of socio-emotional skills from the ethic of self-care is an important contribution to educational innovation, as well as to catalyse the revaluation and re-humanization of the teacher.
